First Look: Evernote for the iPhone
Merlin Mann | Jul 10 2008
(Oh, man. I’ve got a crazy busy day today, but it just got a lot busier thanks to an intoxicating morning with the iPhone 2.0 update and the iTunes App Store. I’ll try and sneak in a few little posts today on the amazing new apps as time permits) Evernote (iTunes App Store Link)
I need to do a full post on Evernote here some time soon, because it really is a nifty little application for collecting, storing, and organizing practically any kind of information you can throw at it. The iPhone version is a stripped-down, all-business version of the app that will scratch an itch for Evernote fans who are fatigued by having to email everything to the mothership. More after the jump, including how to take screengrabs like this on your iPhone 2.0… The Evernote iPhone app is crazy-simple to use, and rightfully focuses on mobile capture. Photos, voice, and text can be sent directly into your Big Evernote Database — including the handy inclusion of location data which will show up in Evernote as Lat/Long, all thanks to iPhone’s 2.0 location magic (and yes: the location stuff works fine without GPS; I do wonder how that will affect sales of what’s starting to look like a costly 3G iPhone I can personally do without). You can also access your existing stuff in browsable list form, or by searching, And, yes, once the photo you take in Evernote has synced with the EN site, the OCR makes any readable text in the image searchable from the iPhone app. Very nicely done. Cool New iPhone Feature: Built-in Screen CaptureNota frickin’ bene: How did I get screengrabs on an uncracked 2.0 iPhone? Easy. Click the Home button and the top (Power) button at the same time to capture a PNG of the current screen to the Photo Viewer (grabbable later via iPhoto). Hat tip to Jason Snell for this awesome little bit of magic. 11 Comments

The only thing keeping me tied to Yojimbo has been it’s Quicksilver plugin. But man…this might push me all the way over to Evernote. »
Evernote is quite cool but...Submitted by stevenf on July 10, 2008 - 4:48pm.
Two big problems for me:
You can zoom in, but it doesn’t wrap the text, meaning you have to do a lot of side-to-side scrolling. The text is readable on the iPhone if you make it HUGE on the desktop version — but then it’s huge on the desktop version. Last but not least, I’ve had a number of weird problems with formatting when going back and forth between the desktop and web clients. I’ve seen the web client just completely munge a note I created on the desktop, stripping all its line breaks, using the wrong font styles, etc. Evernote is extremely promising though. If they can work out the kinks, I’ll be all over it. »
Cool AppSubmitted by troymalone on July 11, 2008 - 11:32am.
I have been waiting for somewhere to jot down thoughts and the like on my iphone. What a great add. This one is exciting. I also like the ability to take voice notes. That is a nice function as well if you are driving and can't type in a note. I will wait until the chaos ends with the iphone 3g launch and then get it! Troy Malone »
No offline accessSubmitted by yesno on July 12, 2008 - 11:42am.
You cannot see your notes unless you’re online. Kind of defeats to purpose of a native app, to require a network connection. »
Link to All New iPhone Apps Sorted by Release DateSubmitted by kidneynotes on July 12, 2008 - 12:44pm.
Evernote is great, and it looks there's a trickle of new productivity apps being added (Byline, Instapaper). Strangely, Apple didn't post a one-click link to the iTunes Store page with all the new apps, sorted by release date, so I created one: tinyurl.com/newiphoneapps. Can be dragged to the browser bar. Opens up the proper page in iTunes. Real useful. (Full details are here.) »
Good bye, Evernote.Submitted by yesno on July 13, 2008 - 9:43am.
From the Evernote forums. The only offline access they intend to add is that same as I can already get through Mail.app’s Notes feature. Good-bye, Evernote. (I guess it could still be useful if you do a lot of “web clipping,” but I use del.icio.us for that sort of thing.) “Thanks for the feedback. We’re finishing a rewrite of our POP/IMAP mail gateway, which would let you pull down a copy of all of your notes, which you can read offline on any smart phone (including the iPhone). This will provide the first level of “offline” support. Building a full synchronizing client on the phone is also of interest, but this turns out to be a lot of extra work, so won’t happen in the short term. We’re also considering options around mobile editing … as you say, this would need to give you a lot of warning that it will discard all formatting, images, audio, PDF, etc. We just want to make sure that this is more useful than irritating.” »
Evernote was looking more and more interestingSubmitted by CuriousG on July 13, 2008 - 10:00pm.
Until I finally got my OmniFocus for iphone syncing properly. Now I want to say focused (OmniFocused) on capturing what I need on the hoof I am after good voice notes on the iphone (I’m sticking with my 2G iphone). One of my few beefs with the iphone is that the speaker phone bites. It is listening to someone who has been smoking their entire life that is on their death bed. “What’s that. I can’t make out what you’re saying.” The few free voice apps along with Evernote I can’t even hear when I play them back in the car, though I can hear them in a quieter environment (or on my laptop on Evernote when I get home). I’ve yet to try the voicenotes on OmniFocus. I should go do that now. Maybe I already have my solution. Merlin if you happen to know if one of those new iphone apps tends to boost the volume a bit, it would be great to hear about that. I hate having to use a separate voice recorder (I have an Olympus that works well, and that is 13 times louder than the iphone speaker) rather than having all delicious GTD goodness in one tasty iphone package. »

Hey CuriousG, I haven’t got a 3G iPhone yet… but the Jott app looks to be a promising application: http://jott.com/jotters/index.php/iphone Would be good to get it working with OmniFocus. (ie by having it email an address that OmniFocus parses) As for Evernote: I signed up a few weeks ago in preparation for the iPhone application but am also disappointed that it doesn’t cache. Makes it very un-bandwidth friendly in Australia where there are NO unlimited data plans. »

I must agree with Steven. Evernote is absolutely fantastic, but the mobile app. isn’t very useful due to the inability to edit notes. More often than not I desire to edit notes from my phone as opposed to creating new ones. Further, I could easily create a new note by bypassing the app. and sending a text, pic, etc. to my Evernote email address. On a somewhat related note, Jott works like a charm with Evernote, using your user-specific email address. I definitely recommend the combo! »
Jott & EvernoteSubmitted by CuriousG on July 18, 2008 - 12:21am.
Hey Stu, You won’t need the 3G, that is unless you don’t already have 1st gen iPhone. All the apps work well on the first phone, with the exception of the speakerphone volume I mentioned. I actually crave decent speaker phone volume more than I do faster Internet, but I think I’m still gonna keep my money in my pocket for now. Yeah, and once they work the bugs out, OmniFocus also has its own voice notes for next actions. Now that they’ve worked through a couple of the bugs with Jott I’m finding that very handy so far. I love that you hit anywhere on the screen to start and stop. Now that makes sense for driving. With Evernote, I’m hoping that the fact that it is still in Beta means that there will be some improvements coming up on the iphone version too. Edit-able notes would be great. Much large text would be helpful on the go too. »
