grant's blogIt means "Just Enough."grant balfour | Jun 23 2008I'm not sure how anyone feels about the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis - the idea that the words we use shape the way we think or exist - but I'm much happier knowing that the word "lagom" is out there. I am entering it into my person lexicon forthwith. POSTED IN:

Bruce Lee: Productivity Dragongrant balfour | May 9 2008The aptly named "Positivity Blog" recently had a rather compelling overview of Bruce Lee, Productivity Guru. Like our own dear Merlin, Mr. Lee was from the Bay Area and took a lifelong interest in the fundamental rules underlying systems; unlike Mr. Mann, Bruce Lee could break Chuck Norris in half but never once listened to Zen Arcade. Self-control running low?grant balfour | Mar 12 2008Why is it so hard to say no? Why the heck do I find myself doing things I don't really want to do? In the newsroom where I ostensibly work, I sit right next to that table - the one the people from other publications call "the table of perpetual indulgence." It usually features baked goods and junk food - great vats of candy, tubs of animal crackers, a living sea of bite-sized 3 Musketeers and Special Dark bars. It is, put simply, bad for me to be sitting here. I'm always walking off to the printer then realizing that somehow I've wound up in the opposite direction, lifting syrup-filled brownies toward my mouth. Well, I think I just found out the reason why. POSTED IN:
It's not a bug, it's kung fu.grant balfour | Jan 28 2008My wife has been using martial arts techniques on our children and it's made our lives a lot easier, especially around meal times. She's no martial artist, but has managed to master a technique called sui ren zhi shi, jie ren zhi li - one of the fundamental combat principles of taijiquan. The technique - and it's a killer one - is better known on the net in the really old joke, "That's not a bug - it's a feature!" I love it when this action works, and I want to teach myself how to do it more often. Especially on the kids. read more » POSTED IN:
Borges on iTunes. Sort of.grant balfour | Dec 27 2007Quote:
For one of those gnostics, the visible universe was an illusion or, more precisely, a sophism. Mirrors and fatherhood are abominable because they multiply it and extend it. For Christmas, I was quite pleased to get a Zen Stone Plus in my stocking. I'm one of those people - the ones who exist between platforms. (I lost my true allegiance decades ago, and have been a switch-hitter ever since.) One of the things this means is that I do some things by hand that other people - the loyalists - are used to having done automatically. So there I was, Christmas afternoon, moving playlists from the iTunes on our Windows machine onto the cute little non-iPod. Grab, drag, copy. The process immediately reminded me of Jorge Luis Borges' riffs on mirrors. read more » POSTED IN:
